Mike and Tony have now both retired, but the firm continues as McMurtry and Harding, run by partners Dan Harding, Tony's son, Stephen Trethewey and Michael Colgan
Business has grown steadily over the years, and Dan and Stephen decided to extend and upgrade the surgery during the winter of 2002/3. It now has a brand new vets' consulting room, a separate nurses' consulting room and a new-look reception area and waiting room, all with air conditioning. The operating theatre and kennels have also been re-organised.
Of the six vets who work at McMurtry and Harding's Wirksworth and Ashbourne surgeries, three share the workload at Wirksworth - Stephen Trethewey, Peter Ventner and Michael Colgan. Three nurses from the six-strong nurse team also work at Wirksworth - Dawn Wainwright, Sally Robotham and Justine Spivey. Liz Griffiths is the receptionist from Monday to Thursday, with Victoria Bryant taking over from Liz on Fridays.
All consultations are by appointment, and the surgery is open six days a week. There are morning, afternoon and evening surgeries, and operations are carried out each day after morning surgery.
There is a Saturday afternoon surgery from 13.30 - 15.00.
McMurtry & Harding offer free 'well pet' check-ups, with qualified nurses. These include examinations and advice on diet, worming and flea treatment. In addition, pensioners are eligible for special discounts during afternoon surgery which is between 2.00 and 3.30.
