B. PAYNE AND SON LTD - CHEMIST

History Nicholas Payne MRPharmS used to run the business with help and encouragement from his father John Payne and his wife Nora. It is with deep regret to announce that both John and Nora are no longer with us, but Nick continues to run the successful family business. The company name B Payne & Son Ltd originates with Benjamin Payne (John's father, Nicholas' grandfather). He purchased the business from Robert "Bob" Hindle in the 1930's. Bob Hindle himself had taken the business over from his father and records do exist to show that there had been a Pharmacy on this site in 1756 being operated by a Mr Moore. It seems reasonable to assume that the business was operating for at least a short while before then-in fact the very start of the history of modern pharmacy could be said to have started with the creation of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in London in 1742.

History of the building. One of the most striking features for any visitor are the double bow-fronted windows adorning the front of the premises. The center part of the building is the most historic, dating from the 17th century and featured by mullion windows upstairs (see photo). Both the existing front part and the rear parts of the building were added later on in the 17th century although we are unsure whether the bow-fronted windows were original to then or added later.
