North End Mills
Working machines in the viewing area In 1805 the land on which North End Mills now stands was bought by the husband of Susannah Arkwright, the daughter of Sir Richard Arkwright.

This acted as a catalyst for industry. The 1860's the Mills were the Swan Public House. In 1881, the Mill was a steam driven sawmill. 1887 saw the Haarlem Tape Company manufacture 800 miles of red tape per week and during the war, the Mills were used by the Home Guard.
A special viewing area gives a unique insight into the manufacture of some of the items on Sale in the Factory Shop and more unusual knitted products used in industry.

Customers can also enjoy a break in our refreshment and childrens play area which is adjacent to the working display and exhibition which relives North End Mills colourful past.

The Heritage Centre
The Heritage Centre The Story of Wirksworth encompasses the history of the town from prehistoric times to the modern day. The prosperity of the town was built on lead mining which declined in the nineteenth century. Quarrying and the manufacture of tape then became the principal occupations which have only recently died out. The Heritage and Visitor Centre shows through numerous exhibits and hands on experiences how the town and surrounding area has grown over the last two thousand years. Come and spend some time re-living the experiences and customs of this quaint little town. Miles of Red Tape
